During summer, the school replaced the bells, causing students to debate on whether or not the new school bell was the right idea.
“I have mixed feelings about the bell,” senior Anshul Katakwar said. “I like how it isn’t as loud as the one from last year, but it also gets repetitive.”
The new bell has a quiet and calmer sound than the old bell, and while that can be a nice change, many students think it’s not as effective as the blaring sound of a normal high school bell.
“The new bell is unique,” junior Liad Studnik said. “For something that is intended to enforce effective attendance, [though], the new bell may not be achieving that goal.”
Many people agree that the previous bell did the job of alarming students to go to their next class or just to alert them in general better than the new, softer bell.
“I prefer the old bell because its blaring noise and aggressive chimes were more effective in convincing me to stop whatever I’m doing and head to my next class or break period,” Studnik said.
While the former bell may have been a pain for students to hear every day on multiple occasions, the faint and slow ringing of the upgraded bell might not be the most ideal for students who are hard of hearing or those who are in a loud environment.
“I think it is effective for class,” junior Morsal Samim said.”But when you’re outside you can’t really hear it and it doesn’t really startle you into going to class like the old bell.”
Though many students don’t typically have a liking for the new bell, they do think it can help when going from class to class.
“I think it’s more effective even though I don’t like it,” junior Aiden Lopez said. “It sounds calmer and helps students more and lets the kids know that they have to be quiet.”
Along with the new bell, the school also decided to change the regular analog clocks that most schools have and replace it with a digital clock that tells the time as well as the day and date.
“They should have kept the analog clocks because it’s important for students to know how to read the time.” Lopez said.
The bell and the new clocks, though they have had mixed opinions from all students, are effective in some ways and they help mark the new semester.
“I think they changed the bell because it’s so old and a new one will be better for the new year,” Katakwar said.
