United States (US) President Donald Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, August 15, at the 2025 Russia-US Summit. A truly long-awaited meeting finally played out as the two world leaders met up in person for the first time since 2019. The last time being at an informal meeting at the Group of Twenty–an international forum for the world’s largest economies. Their recent meeting was held in Anchorage, Alaska, at the Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson. This meeting, more commonly referred to as a summit, was primarily focused on the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War. Trump repeatedly urged Putin to put a stop to the war however during this meeting, President Trump leaned more towards urging him to come to terms with a ceasefire deal. Regardless of the talks and discussions, Putin and Trump separated at the meeting, without even having the traditional lunch to be held after. Even after this summit, Russia has attacked Ukraine numerous times already, even targeting an American-owned electronics plant located in Ukraine. Many have seen this kind of behavior as extremely repetitive from Russia’s military and leaders and President Trump even recalls that President Putin supposedly acts nice to leaders in person and then proceeds to bomb their countries and their goods anyways. Nearly five days after the summit in Alaska, over 1,000 long-range drones and missiles were fired at Ukraine after the so-called peace talks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and President Trump met again at The White House, nearly two days after Trump’s meeting with President Putin. This time, in comparison to their last, heated meeting, conversations were warm and much more welcoming to plans moving forward in regards to the ongoing war. Additionally, President Zelenskyy has agreed numerous times to a meeting with Russian leaders, even including President Putin, however Moscow officials have raised questions and backed out time and time again. Ukrainian officials see this to be their continuous backing out from ceasefire deals, showing their inclination towards no backing out anytime soon. Regardless of the talks, Ukraine continues to mourn the continuous losses of civilians and loved ones as an additional 23 civilians, including four children, were killed in a major Russian missile and drone strike on the Ukrainian capital. Authorities in Kyiv declared a day of mourning, August 29, to commemorate the lives lost and flew all flags at half-staff, as well as canceled all entertainment events. As meetings, conferences and summits continue, the US continues to show their support to Ukraine as well as attempt to negotiate deals with President Putin and Russian officials.
