As the boys varsity volleyball team begin their league season, they are ready to showcase the hard work and dedication they have put in over the past few months and play their best in ten matches against fierce competition.
“[Our biggest competitor] is Chatsworth,” senior Tyler Lee said. “They have a really strong team, and have also won City Championships for the past two years.”
With other teams having major successes, the athletes have been putting ample effort into countless practices, refining the skills they already have while also building new ones.
“[At practice] we work on hitting, serving and digging, and we also scrimmage,” Lee said. “We’ve been working super hard so it’ll pay off during games.”
The team is mostly composed of busy seniors and juniors, so the time they have been putting into volleyball is valuable, highlighting their dedication. The drills they have been working on will help them succeed, but the team dynamic is also an important factor in their success.
“We did a lot of team bonding activities on our trip to San Diego,” senior Adam Gars said. “The whole team is pretty close and we’re always on top of each other, holding each other accountable.”
The bond of the athletes will make them successful in future matches as they support and encourage each other through hardships, with the help of their coach.
“Our coach, [Alyssa Lee] has helped us run plays, and usually [when we lose] we just try to see what went wrong in that game and try to fix it at practice, and she tells us what to work on,” Gars said. “Of course, the losses are always tough, but we know it’s not that big of a deal. They can only help us to get better.”
The team’s performance has already shown promising signs for future matches, with many of their pre-season games leading to key victories, giving them a strong chance of a very successful league season.
“[Our future goals] are to win the City Championships this year,” Gars said. “Other than that, [our goals are] just to get more playing time and experience on the court, and to continue to get better.
