After hours of rehearsal and hard work, the school’s drama department participated in the Drama Teacher Association of Southern California (DTASC) Competition Oct. 17, strengthening their dynamics and bringing home some awards.
“DTASC is the congregation of a bunch of theater kids [where we perform] a bunch of short scenes that we’ve been working on since the start of the school year,” sophomore Emma Fishman said. “It’s so fun and very spirited.”
At the competition, groups of students from schools across Southern California compete in performing the best scenes in five to eight minutes. With many categories including student original, open comedy, open drama, Oscar and others including set design and lighting, the drama program brought back numerous awards and joy from their success.
“We made it to finals, which I think is pretty good, and we got an honorable mention,” sophomore Lua Guimaraes said. “I feel like we all worked pretty hard.”
Overall, the team won six accolades including first place in Lighting, fifth place in Set design, fifth place in Student original and honorable mention in Marketing, Comedy and Drama.
“Getting honorable mention was actually pretty good because our score sheets said everything was good,” Fishman said. “It was my first time directing so to get to finals was an accomplishment.”
The students in the drama program worked very hard to accomplish their best at DTASC. Their results reflected their hard work and dedication and pushed them to continue thriving and supporting each other.
“We were all really close, and I’m really proud of [everyone],” junior Marko Karovic said. “[We] were so good and all worked together really well.”
Throughout the year, the program has been dedicated in preparation for the competition. With all the time spent together they have developed a great team relationship and made their hard work come to life.
“The night before [DTASC] we all had a big sleep over,” Karovic said. “We were [in the theater room] before school, during lunch and after school rehearsing, so we were always together.”
The team grew very close during class and over the time they spent practicing. They formed meaningful friendships and their bonds only helped them towards victory.
“In the end we worked together and had our best run,” Guimaraes said. “We all kept encouraging each other and [our teamwork] helped us in our scenes.”
