As the girl’s volleyball season kicked off Aug. 20, the team has already found success from the hard work and dedication they have put in and the strong team chemistry they have cultivated.
“Our season has been good [so far],” junior varsity (JV) player and junior Lea Foster said. “We’ve been working hard at practice and we’re just trying to get better.”
All three girls teams, JV, Freshman/Sophomore (Frosh) and Varsity have all been working hard everyday during practice since the school year has started. They train everyday during sixth period until 5:00 p.m. Some players even trained over the summer during a three-day volleyball training camp and through summer scrimmage games.
“I feel like our school starts later than most other schools so we didn’t have as much time to practice,” varsity player and junior Marielle Flores said. “I think we did play well for the short amount of time that we had to practice.”
Despite having less practice time than other schools, the girls teams have still put in their best efforts to play with their best performances. They plan to continue working hard until the end of their season, Oct. 16.
“[Our] practices have been filled with lots of drills and a lot of conditioning,” JV player and junior Sofia Galvez said. “[The] season so far has been fun despite our loss in the first game, but we are still building chemistry as a team.”
All three teams played their first away game against Newbury Park High School and put up a good fight. Even though they didn’t win, it didn’t stop the team from keeping their heads up. They use their first loss as motivation to work even harder for the rest of their season.
“[The first game] didn’t go so well, but we’ve been working on everything we didn’t do that well at,” Foster said. “We’re just going to keep getting better.”
The team continues to have a close relationship and always tries to lift each other up. The comfortable environment that the members of the teams created makes it easier to have chemistry during games, and each person’s kindness helps encourage improvement.
“There is not one mean girl in that gym,” Foster said. “Everyone loves each other, and everyone is so nice and helpful.”
Though the girls may feel pressure at times, they each make sure to keep things fun during practices, knowing that their shared love for the sport is a driving factor to work hard together. “It’s a very friendly environment and it’s very fun,” varsity player and junior Aja Najar said.
Despite a not-so-favorable start to their season, The morale during practices are always high and the team has been building their skills every day, with an unwavering commitment. The girls are pumped up to see how their season will go, and we wish them luck.
“We lost our first game, but it was still a good fight.” Najar said. “We’re ready for our next games.”
