Icelandic jazz-pop singer Laufey Jónsdóttir, known to most as just Laufey, released her third studio album “A Matter of Time,” Aug. 22, exciting fans worldwide.
Born in 1999 in Reykjavík, Iceland, Laufey grew up around musical notes and instruments. Her mother was a classical violinist and her grandfather was a violin teacher. Raised with a rich musical upbringing, Laufey found a strong family bond and deep passion that inspired her to learn the piano, cello, and violin in her childhood years.
She graduated from Reykjavík College of Music in 2018. Two years later, she debuted with her first single “Street by Street” focusing on jazz and classical-inspired music.
As her career progressed, Laufey released additional singles and extended plays (EPs) like the hit song “Let You Break My Heart Again” and the EP “Typical of Me.” Her public-adored tracks propagated her rise to fame. Laufey released her first album titled “Everything I Know About Love” Oct. 2022, featuring the incredibly popular track “Falling Behind.” “Falling Behind” became popular across various social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, garnering attention for the jazz-pop star.
She followed this album release with an album titled “A Night At the Symphony” just five months later. This album featured old and new songs recorded live with the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra, an alternate song version that Lauvers–her fandom name–often found to be their favorites. In “A Night At the Symphony,” Laufey released a track titled “Ég Veit þú Kemur” in her native language of Icelandic.
After this album release, however, Laufey released her most popular album “Bewitched,” which featured hit songs like “Promise,” “Letter To My 13 Year Old Self” and the title track “Bewitched.” Although the other tracks comprising the famed album became fan-favorites as well, the most popular tracks received large amounts of attention across social media platforms worldwide, garnering different trends and a general appreciation for Laufey’s music.
The following year, Laufey released a deluxe edition of her hit album and titled it “Bewitched: Goddess Edition.” This deluxe edition featured four additional songs titled “Bored,” “Trouble,” “It Could Happen to You” and “Goddess.” “Goddess” in particular garnered a significant amount of attention, shocking and intriguing Lauvers with her skill as a vocalist and lyricist.
Like some of her more emotional tracks, Laufey expressed her more vulnerable side to the world with the release of her most recent album, “A Matter of Time.” Laufey teased the release of her new album with the release of the singles “Tough Luck,” “Lover Girl” and “Snow White,” the latter two of which quickly became fan-favorites. In this album, Laufey aimed and succeeded to paint an image of self-discovery in relation to romantic feelings and the passage of time, an ode to the album’s title and clock motifs.
In light of her adored release, Laufey announced a tour for “A Matter of Time” with famed British singer Suki Waterhouse as an opener. Beginning Sept. 15 in Orlando, FL., the “A Matter of Time” tour kicked off and is set to stretch through the end of Oct., the final date of the United States (U.S.) branch being in Boston, MA. Oct. 27. As clips and videos of the tour so far circulate their rounds around social media, fans have fallen in love with her performance and impactful stage presence. With this tour came an accredited setlist comprised of Laufey’s newest songs, save for a couple of tracks. Along with well-known songs from her previous albums such as “Falling Behind,” “Promise,” “Goddess” and “Letter To My 13 Year Old Self,” along with an additional surprise song for every city she visits on this tour. Additionally, Laufey’s tour has given way to a new tradition where one of the Lauvers in attendance is named the “best-dressed guest” each night. As a reward for the flattering title, the chosen Lauver is brought near the stage to be crowned with a custom-made Oddli-brand crown. The tour will pick back up Feb. 18 for its Europe branch, beginning in Zürich, Switzerland and ending in Kópavogur, Iceland March 15.
With the progression of the “A Matter of Time” tour and, in turn, Laufey’s career, this illustrious Icelandic singer has impressed and entertained millions of Lauvers with her music, past and present. Truly, it is only a matter of time before she releases more hits.
