An invigorating volleyball game drew students into the gym, Friday, Sept. 19, to watch their peers and their teachers battle it out on the court.
“It’s my senior year, so I just wanted to have fun and do as many events as possible,” senior Amari Anderson said. “I’m not good at volleyball, but it was really fun playing against the teachers and even some of my own teachers that I had in previous years.”
Student Council planned a Student versus Staff volleyball game as a lunchtime activity that invited students coming to the gym to cheer on and play against their teachers. There was a team of student volunteers who played against a team of eager teachers, and other non-participating students were able to stay involved by keeping score, serving as referees or showing their support from the sidelines.
“The student versus staff volleyball game was really fun because it was one of the first big events I’ve planned as Coordinator of Athletics,” senior Ethan Bastillo said. “It was really fun seeing that we had a full gym of students and staff that participated.”
The event had a great turnout as the gym was completely full with people and eventually reached its capacity for the students continuing to file in. As excited fans came in, they were given spirited accessories to show what team they were rooting for and get them hyped for the game.
“I had a lot of positive feedback from staff and from fellow students saying that it was really fun,” Bastillo said. “It was nice having the things like the noisemakers and the flags to celebrate for staff and students. It really helped participation.”
The game itself was exciting, with the teachers coming back at the students in quick movements, and the students playing back just as fast, keeping everyone on their toes.
“[My favorite part was just getting blocked by Mr. Knadle, to be honest,” senior Austin Pham said. “He got me good there. That was, like, the highlight of the game for me.”
They played a total of two games during lunch, the teachers winning the first full game and the students winning the second, shorter game.
“I think it was really fun being able to play against the teachers and seeing the skill,” Pham said. “Playing with my friends and all too; it was just a great experience.”
