The 2025 Formula One (F1) season started March 15 and has been filled with twists and turns; the chaos has caused many unexpected results to be unpacked as they start summer break.
The McLaren F1 Racing Team have been by far the best team this season, winning 11 of the 14 races so far. They have a total of 559 points, more than double the amount of points the second place team in the Constructors Championship has.
Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are the two drivers for McLaren and both have been very competitive this season, with Piastri leading the championship, having six wins. Norris, with a slow start, has earned five race wins and is still in contention to win the championship as well.
Scuderia Ferrari is in second place in the championship but are not within striking range of first. They have had a disappointing season with many different issues, including problems with their car and being slower than they previously thought. It was projected to be a championship-level season from Ferrari with the addition of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, but it has not turned out that way for them.
While this season has been filled with a clear McLaren dominance so far, there have been a few surprising and celebratory moments for F1 fans. The most prominent of which being Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg got his first podium of his career. After 15 years and 239 race starts, Hulkenberg flew to third place during the British Grand Prix. This victory was completely unexpected but celebrated thoroughly in the F1 community. It will remain a great memory to keep from this season.
Another shock factor that rippled throughout this season was the new team set-ups. Many drivers have joined new teams for the 2025 season. A common pattern between these drivers has been that they are struggling to keep up with their teammates. One prominent example would be Hamilton’s massive move by joining Ferrari.
Many people thought that with the sole record holder for the amount of drivers championships, Ferrari would be revived from the seemingly lackluster seasons they have faced. Hamilton, though, is currently 42 points behind his teammate Charles Leclerc and has finished behind him in almost every race. In recent interviews, Hamilton has worried fans with comments filled with self doubt, causing many to turn and question the team inserting insecurity into the champion.
Carlos Sainz was another driver who made a big move this season. He joined Williams after his seat with Ferrari was opened for Hamilton. He has failed to stay at the pace of his teammate Alex Albon who has 54 points this season while Sainz only has 16. This slight disappointment has led to phenomenal performance by the team, though, with their current points this season already quadrupling the amount they had in the whole 2024 season.
Yuki Tsunoda is another driver who has struggled on his new team. He joined Redbull Racing near the start of the season. Since his move, Tsunoda has struggled to keep up with his teammate Max Verstappen and only has 10 points on the season with only two being for Red Bull.
Redbull have not been successful in the 2025 season as they have fallen out of the championship battle and are stuck in fourth place in the Constructors Championship.
If Max Verstappen’s points were removed from the team they would only have seven points which would put them in last place. This is one of the biggest shocks of the 2025 season so far.
Redbull’s failures have stirred rumors that driver Max Verstappen wants to leave the team and go to fierce rivals Mercedes. Although the substance of the rumors were questionable, many people think he will leave the team.
With a lively season, F1 fans are undoubtedly excited for the return of the sport after summer break, and will await an end to the season just as exciting as the beginning.
