Leading up to the much anticipated Powderpuff game, student council (StuCo) created a colorful spirit week, April 1-4, to raise school spirit for game day.
“When planning the Powderpuff spirit week, I collaborated with Nimran Singh and Abby Liebrecht, who organized Powderpuff, to incorporate their ideas,” junior Ava Orellana said. “We looked at other schools for inspiration and took input from other Student Council members to enhance our school culture.”
The Powderpuff spirit week lasted from Tuesday, April 1 to Friday, April 4, game day. The first day of the week was themed Adam Sandler day, and students showed up dressed in their most Sandler-like attire, with baseball caps, sunglasses and basketball shorts seen all around the school.
“I thought it was really fun and [that] it went really well this year,” junior Kate Hoke said. “I felt like a lot of people were very hyped and spirited.”
After the first day, the following spirit days for Wednesday and Thursday were United States of America day and Anything but a backpack day, respectively. The day of the game, though, StuCo prompted students to wear either white to support the junior team, or pink and blue tosupport the senior team.
“Although it was a stressful week due to being a player in Powderpuff, the spirit week went smoothly, and the turnout was impressive,” Orellana said.
Many students showed up to school during the Powderpuff spirit week participating in both the theme and the lunch activities. Some of the lunch activities were an inflatable bubble competition and a T-shirt wearing competition. The lunch activities culminated in a pep rally on Friday.
“[My favorite part] was probably the pep rally,” Hoke said. “It was just so much fun the whole day, and there was just a lot of spirit at school.”
The pep rally was many students highlight of the week, with performances from both junior and senior cheerleaders at the Quad, and a tug-of-war match against the two teams, resulting in a junior victory.
“I feel like it definitely made us [players] more enthusiastic and more ready for the game on Friday,” Hoke said. “[The spirit week] also had the whole school, collectively on the same page [and] excited for the game.”
