The school’s baseball team has started their league play with a successful record of six wins and one loss, which is currently the second best in the West Valley League.
“We’ve played well as a team so far and we hope to continue that,” second baseman, third baseman and pitcher sophomore Jackson Sellz said.
While the baseball team has performed well so far, they have faced some challenges in the season that have made the players increase their work ethic, resolve and confidence.
“The main challenge we have faced was gaining our confidence back after a couple losses in a row,” Sellz said. “We didn’t do well, but I believe we have gotten that confidence back.”
The team has managed to continue to work hard and get through the challenges they have been facing. By remembering why they play the game, the team was able to get through the early season jitters.
“The way I got through challenges was reminding myself that it’s all a game,” third baseman and outfielder sophomore RJ De La Rosa said. “I figured out that I was stressing out over the little things and didn’t have fun playing the game. Reminding myself to have fun was a big mental game that I overcame.”
Overcoming the challenges the baseball team has faced was difficult and pushed the players to their limits. They have succeeded in their strive for improvement, they have made great memories with their teammates that will last a lifetime.
“My favorite game was against Cleveland because we were able to play against my older brother. We won that game 2-1 on a walk off in the last inning,” De La Rosa said. “Facing my brother was really fun.”
The team’s support from family and friends helps them to prosper. They’ve been able to work together and put rough games behind them, while learning from mistakes to help the team to grow. Some athletes have even been able to move up to higher levels and challenge themselves even more than they have previously
“One change I’ve faced was adjusting to the pace of play from junior varsity to varsity,” De La Rosa said. “The game has sped up a great amount but I’ve adjusted pretty well.”
The team has been able to maintain a positive attitude throughout hardships and work together to overcome hurdles that being on the baseball team has thrown at them.
“The main challenge we have faced was gaining our confidence back after a couple losses in a row,” Sellz said. “We didn’t do well, but I believe we have gotten that confidence back.”
