The school’s Student Council (StuCo) hosted a snack selling event over the course of three days during the March Madness Games to raise money for the Thirst Project, an organization dedicated to providing clean water for those in need.
“It’s so great to see the school and its students being involved in a cause that aims to support those who aren’t as lucky and privileged,” junior Liad Studnik said. “They’re equally deserving of the basic necessities in this world.”
The StuCo Snack Shack took place March 12-14 and was held after school in the foyer selling a variety of snacks, including cookies, chips and drinks for students.
“I love the idea that [the school] is working with the [Thirst Project] since it’s such a great way to connect to the community,” junior Sophia Ly said. “Plus, who doesn’t like snacks?”
The money raised during the event was entirely donated to the Thirst Project, which is the world’s largest youth water organization and currently has over 3,500 projects to help people across 13 countries gain access to clean water.
“I think it’s really cool that the Snack Shack is doing something for a greater cause,” junior Elizabeth Choi said. “It’s a great idea.”
The organization pairs with schools in nearly every state to involve the youth in awareness and fundraising campaigns throughout their local communities. Its goal is to have students make a real impact on the global water crisis.
“Efforts like those hoped to be accomplished by the StuCo Snack Shack are important and especially vital in showing communities, and the larger society, that support and dedication at a small scale is just as valuable to those less fortunate than that of a larger organization,” Studnik said.
The project was originally founded by then college student Seth Maxwell, who has gone on to lead an ever-expanding community of members to help over 500,000 people have clean, safe and accessible water.
“The youth’s participation in these organizations and efforts is incredibly important,” Studnik said. “Taking action in one’s community at a young age is one of the most momentous steps a person can take to give back to their community while also setting a precedent for their future actions in life.”
