The school’s girls soccer team is off to a strong start as their season began Jan. 15., with a 1-0 win against Birmingham Charter High School.
“I’m really excited for this season, [and] our team is looking really good,” senior Alexandra Ramirez said. “We’re still a very young team with a lot of freshmen and sophomores, but I’m confident in the upcoming season.”
The team chemistry that the girls soccer program has led them to a strong beginning of the season; they won three out of their first four games. The players have expressed their love for the team, and although they were not close at the start, they have gotten to know each other and are able to work better together during games.
“It’s a really strong bond we have here,” sophomore Scarlet Harris said. “The community of the team itself is something that you can’t really find anywhere else on campus.”
Motivating each other has been a key to their early success, mixing their training and friendship to create chemistry on the field. The team morale has been at an all time high as their recent wins have kept them in hopeful spirits.
“I motivate myself by looking at the people I have around me, making it about them and providing a good influence for them for the season,” senior Vanessa Longmire said.
Motivation and teamwork has built good habits that will stay with the team for a long time. The amount of discipline and hours the players have put into the sport has been a lesson for them on and off the field.
“My favorite part about soccer is the teamwork and the discipline,” Ramirez said. “The discipline throughout my sport changed the discipline in my life. I’ve also seen the family connection I have been able to make with my teammates.”
The girls’ shared love for the sport has kept them self-assured even after their recent loss against Granada Hills Charter High School, with a score of 0-3. Their season is off to a great start, and each player has been excited to see their hard work pay off.
“I’d say [the best part is] the competitiveness,” Harris said. “I love it when a game gets scrappy and it’s just you and the other team.”
