With Thanksgiving break soon approaching, the school flooded with spirit for the new Color Wars class competition. Each class battled it out with challenges to win the grand prize of Raising Cane’s fried chicken at the end of the week, Nov. 22.
“Color Wars is an opportunity for all of the different grade levels to compete against each other for a prize,” sophomore Lianna Tseselsky said. “There are games, you dress up, you go to the steering clubs and you repost stories all so that you can get points for your class.”
Color Wars is a competition between grade levels where each class has to fit the day’s theme or win lunchtime games to win points. Whoever amounted the most points by Thursday at nutrition would be crowned the winners. This year, it was the seniors who were deemed Color Wars royalty.
“We just wanted something fun for people to do before finals but not too close to finals,” senior Selma Bahy said. “I’m really happy about the turnout and the amount of participation we’ve seen during the event.”
About 550 seniors got a plate of fried chicken and Texas toast to see them off for Thanksgiving break. The sophomore class came into a close second place after leading the competition for a good portion of the week.
“I was enjoying getting people excited and telling people to wear purple and complete tasks,” Tseselsky said. “It was definitely a good bond experience with the sophomores.”
There were many activities in which students could earn points for their grade. The first day was Minion Monday. If students dressed as the theme and sent in pictures of themselves they successfully earned points. They also could have participated in the dodgeball tournament in the gym for points. After a fun couple games of dodgeball, the seniors came out on top.
“[Students] get to go against each other with a bunch of challenges to win an awesome prize,” senior Abby Liebrecht said. “My favorite event, personally, was the obstacle course. It was so much fun going against someone else in a race, and it was on a quad, so everyone [got to be] there.”
Tropical Tuesday was the next event for Color Wars. Students wore their best beach attire and joined student council on the quad for some intense obstacle course fun. Through hula hoops and cones, the sophomores pulled ahead and led the competition by a close 80 points to seniors. Also on Tuesday, the objective to capture the crown hidden somewhere around school started. The official Color Wars account would post a hint as to where on campus it was hidden and students got bonus points for finding it.
“I found the crown and it was really cool,” junior Sophia Saravia said. “[I especially liked] trying to hold it the entire time without getting it stolen from me. I thought it was a lot of fun. ”
Wednesday was United States of America day. Royals dressed up in red, white and blue and participated in the fan favorite lunch activity where they wore blow up bumper balls on the quad. People dressed in patriotic colors rushed to the quad to get a chance to try on the life-sized inflatables and combate their friends with them. Thursday was the last day to get points, with students having to wear their designated class colors. That lunch in the gym they announced that the seniors had won the school’s first ever Color Wars.
“I think my favorite event was the bubble balls,” Saravia said. “It was really fun and I think a lot of people enjoyed it, as it was something new that has never been brought to [the school].”
Even though this was the first time Color War’s was at the school, it was definitely a success. With a slow start to the week, school spirit ramped up for the last day with Royal’s eager to hear the winner. It was undoubtedly a fun event for students who participated and the start of a foreseeable school tradition.
“I’m ecstatic,” Liebrecht said. “Every other class has at least one more chance to win, but this was our only shot, so I’m happy it ended the way it did. It was a lot of fun and I wish I had another year to do it again.”
