The “Light Up The Night” homecoming dance was celebrated by many students, Oct. 5, making it a magical and bright night.
“Planning the event was definitely a challenge,” sophomore and homecoming committee member Anne Crawford said. “[The process] showed me how much really goes into planning it and all of the little details you have to think about.”
The theme was inspired by the iconic Disney movie, “Tangled.” Student Council’s Homecoming committee was hard at work making sure the event would be an exciting night.
“We went about picking decorations simply based on aligning them with the theme,” Crawford said. “[We thought about] what would make people feel like they were in the movie.”
The dance had a variety of delicious food, alongside games like light emitting diode (LED) Foosball, LED Cornhole, spray tattoo artists and photobooths. The dance was decorated with string lights above the quad, as well as purple and yellow flower centerpieces resembling the “Tangled” theme.
“The dancing was really fun, especially having everybody come together and sing and dance,” senior Oliver Green said. “It was fun seeing everyone getting excited for the good songs and the overall atmosphere.”
To further advertise the event, the Student Council created a poster that went along the main C hallway. The poster featured many of the iconic lanterns from the film, purple flags with the Tangled sun symbol, the beloved character, Pascal, wanted posters that depicted Flynn Rider’s posters and the beautiful, floor to ceiling, tower.
“Making the hallway length poster was a lot of work especially since there were so few of us working on it,” Crawford said. “Seeing the finished product as well as receiving several compliments on it made the work worth it.”
Additionally, the Homecoming Spirit Week was hosted with activities the week before the event. Monday’s dress up day was Jersey day and the lunch time activity involved a cup stacking competition. Tuesday was Iconic Duo day and at lunch, students participated in a sack race on the quad. Wednesday was Disney Day with students dressed up as their favorite Disney characters. There was a donut-eating contest, in which many students lined up to join.
“We had to figure out what activities would be done along with help from Student Council with figuring out what our spirit outfits should be,” senior and student Activities committee member Brianna Sanchez said. “There were definitely many stressful parts that went into planning it all.”
There was no school on Thursday due to the celebration of Rosh Hashanah. Therefore, on Friday, the day of the Homecoming game, there was a “Black-Out,” where students were told to wear black-colored gear.
“The stands were packed and there were absolutely no empty spaces in the student section,” junior Eliza Lotterstein said. “Standing on the field with my camera is always so fun because I get to capture the excitement all around.”
During lunch, there was a “Black-Out” pep rally, Oct. 4, where the large gym was transformed into a glow-in-the-dark themed room. Students were handed glow-in-the-dark bracelets and black lights were used to give the room that dark effect.
“I was so excited for this pep rally because it was something different that has never been done,” Sanchez said. “I think that many of the students really liked this pep rally and had fun watching and participating.”
To add to the theme, there was a large variety of performances and announcements made during the pep rally. Groups like Advanced Hip-Hop, Advanced Contemporary, Acapella and Cheer performed.
“We had a packed schedule with the performances from about eight groups,” Sanchez said. “It was exciting to see what they all had to show us.”
With yet another successful event from Student Council, this Homecoming was definitely not one to forget. The school did “Light Up The Night” after all.
“Walking into my first homecoming to see the photo booths, Disc Jockey (DJ) and games made me so excited for the night,” junior Nora Smith said. “I had an absolute blast with my friends and loved the magical theme.”
